Russia opposes presence of European peacekeepers in Ukraine

Moscow, Mar 4 (Prensa Latina) Russia categorically opposes the deployment of European peacekeepers in Ukraine, announced the permanent representative of the Russian Federation to international organizations in Vienna, Mikhail Ulyanov.

“The idea of a hypothetical deployment of European peacekeepers in Ukraine is highly questionable. This is due to two reasons: firstly, the European Union is not impartial and peacekeepers must be impartial. Secondly, Russia is categorically against it,” Ulyanov wrote on his Telegram channel on Tuesday.

The senior diplomat also emphasized that discussions on the issue are hasty and that “European officials are putting the cart before the horse” when talking about peacekeepers in Ukraine.

Earlier, several Western European countries discussed the deployment of contingents from France, the United Kingdom and Poland to “ensure a future ceasefire and lasting peace in Ukraine.

On February 17th, eight European countries held an informal meeting on Ukraine in Paris at the initiative of French President Emmanuel Macron. The meeting was attended by the presidents of the European Council and the European Commission, as well as the Secretary General of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. The talks lasted about three hours and ended without a joint statement.
