The alert comes after the Legislative Assembly approved last month a constitutional reform, at the proposal of the Nuevas Ideas party, which eliminated, the so-called “political debt”, a mechanism through which the state financed with public money the electoral campaigns in the country.
In the voice of its Executive Director, Eduardo Escobar, the organization insisted on the need for a more rigorous control of political parties to avoid illegal financing in dollars, in kind and in cryptocurrencies.
He specified that even with political debt, the regulation lacked legal instruments to effectively oversee the funds received by the parties.
On February 26, the current Legislative Assembly ratified, in the same legislature, the repeal of Article 210 of the Constitution, eliminated the public financing received by political parties and opened the doors to the entry of money of obscure origin, including from drug trafficking, according to experts.
Escobar stated that the Assembly must create the necessary regulation to close any space for illegal financing.
