Haiti to restore degraded forest ecosystems

Port-au-Prince, 27 (Prensa Latina) The Haitian Environment Ministry is putting forward today a strategy to restore degraded forest ecosystems and strengthen the vegetation cover in the Caribbean nation.

In line with this purpose, the Departmental Directorate of the Northeast of the Environment Ministry received 175 kilograms of mahogany seeds (Swietenia Mahogany), delivered by the Directorate of Forestry and Renewable Energy.

These seeds, collected in January, were transferred to the Forest and Fruit Germplasm Center of Ouanaminthe, where they will undergo a rigorous preparation process before being used in the reforestation programs of the aforementioned portfolio.

According to the Haiti Libre digital newspaper, seed treatment is an essential step to ensure maximum germination potential and provide forestry workers with seeds adapted to local weather conditions.

Native seeds will be given top priority as they respond better to climatic stresses and pests.

In June, these mahogany seedlings will be ready and will actively contribute to the national reforestation program of the Pearl of the Antilles.
