The residency by roots was enabled by the Ministries of the Interior and Foreign Affairs in 2024.
According to data from the Refugee Commission (CORE), in the last few months more than 2,000 residency procedures were initiated, Ámbito reported.
The Foreign Ministry points out that of three options available to apply for residency by this modality (family, training or labor), the one applied predominantly is that of labor roots, in more than 90% of the cases.
This type of residency allows regularizing the situation of migrants who entered Uruguayan territory as refugee applicants, but who do not meet the conditions to be covered under this legal figure.
When their application was rejected, they remained in the country irregularly and without a legal option to resolve their situation.
Recently, the head of the National Directorate of Migration (DNM), Eduardo Mata, assured that Uruguay shows a “sustained growth” in terms of immigrants, and that migratory flows to the country experienced some changes in trend during the last few years.
