“At the second attempt, a resolution on democracy, support for Zelenski and the upcoming elections was adopted. It is the same resolution that they failed to pass yesterday,” the lawmaker wrote on his Telegram channel.
The document states that Zelenski should continue to exercise his powers “until the newly elected president of Ukraine takes office.”
In this regard, the Verkhovna Rada notes that the “martial law introduced in Ukraine does not allow elections to be held in accordance with the Constitution, and at the same time, the Ukrainian people are unanimous in the fact that such elections should be organized after the end of the war.”
Zelensky’s presidential powers officially expired on May 20, 2024. As Russian President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly stressed, Zelensky’s legitimacy has ended, so it is important to know who to deal with in Kiev in order to reach the signing of legally binding documents.
Putin explained that the current Ukrainian leadership is currently illegitimate, which could create a legal conflict that would devalue any outcome of the negotiations.
