Mexico seizes 112.8 tons of drugs in less than five months

Mexico City, Feb 25 (Prensa Latina) Mexico arrested 13,139 people in almost five months for high-impact crimes and seized 112.8 tons of drugs, including 1,260 kilograms and 1,324,924 fentanyl pills, it was reported today.

The Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection, Omar García, told a press conference that the authorities also seized 6,582 firearms from October 1, after inauguration of the government headed by President Claudia Sheinbaum, through February 24.

They also located and destroyed 329 clandestine laboratories producing methamphetamines in 13 states of the country.

Additionally, García added, officers seized 482,041 liters and 118,732 kilograms of chemical substances, 352 organic synthesis reactors, 162 condensers and 77 distillers.

Such confiscations have translated in losses for organized crime of more than 300 billion pesos (about 14,662 million dollars).

Previously, the executive secretary of the National Public Security System, Marcela Figueroa, reported a 24.9 percent drop in the daily average number of victims of intentional homicide, under the Sheinbaum administration.

Speaking at the president’s usual morning meeting with journalists, the official stated that the indicator went from an average of 86.93 in September of last year to 65.29 until February 24, according to preliminary figures.

Regarding location of lethal crimes at the national level in the second month of the year, he mentioned that seven entities concentrate 54.37 percent: Guanajuato (15.4), State of Mexico (7.5), Baja California (6.7), Sinaloa (6.6), Michoacán (6.5), Tabasco (6.0) and Sonora (5.7).

Figueroa also highlighted a decrease of 28.7 percent between 2018 (100.5 victims) and 2025 (71.6, according to the preliminary data).

The administration implements a national security strategy based on four axes of action: attention to the causes, consolidation of the National Guard, strengthening of intelligence and investigation, and coordination with the federal entities.
