Italy hosts COP16 meeting on biodiversity

Rome, Feb 25 (Prensa Latina) The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) headquarters in this capital is hosting, from Tuesday to February 27, the new sessions of the COP16 summit on biodiversity.

The event’s organizers informed in a statement that representatives from 150 countries are attending this meeting to seek consensus on the mobilization of resources to implement the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF), approved during the COP15 meeting held in Canada in December 2022.

Following inconclusive negotiations at COP16 held in Cali, Colombia, in late 2024, this new meeting in Rome should endorse the financial mechanisms to mobilize some 200 billion dollars per year needed to implement the KMGBF and improve monitoring to track progress.

The event is presided over again by Colombia, represented by Environment and Sustainable Development Minister Maria Susana Muhamad, and Agriculture and Rural Development Minister Martha Carvajalino.

FAO Director-General Qu Dongyu, and Astrid Schomaker, Executive Secretary of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), also chair the forum.

The CBD executive secretary underscored that the discussions in Rome “are closely linked to the preparations for the COP17 meeting to be held in Armenia in 2026, where the first global stocktake of the Convention’s progress will take place.”
