IMF to evaluate steps taken by El Salvador to receive loan

San Salvador, Feb 25 (Prensa Latina) The Executive Board of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) will assess the steps taken by El Salvador to receive a financial assistance program worth 1.4 billion dollars, a source reported on Monday.

The highest authority of the financial entity will review on Wednesday whether the country complied with the demands to reduce social spending, introduce reforms to stop bitcoin from being legal tender and labor adjustments that entailed the dismissal of some hundreds workers.

Since 2021, the government of President Nayib Bukele has been negotiating the request for funds that will presumably allow other multilaterals to open their portfolios to the plans of the Government of El Salvador. According to a report from local media, the IMF will review the request on February 26 with the first step in the calendar of activities on its agenda about the request of the Extended Fund Facility (EFF), on which the IMF reached a technical agreement with the government on December 18, 2024.

The process is expected to move forward after the government met the conditions, especially the reforms to the bitcoin law, which since its entry into force in September 2021 has been the main obstacle for the agreement to consolidate after four years of negotiations.
