Argentine workers to define plan of struggle

Buenos Aires, Feb 25 (Prensa Latina) The State Workers Association (ATE) will hold a federal plenary to define a plan of struggle, as part of which it could call for a national strike against the policies of the Argentine government.

The General Secretary of the union, Rodolfo Aguiar, issued a statement saying that the meeting will take place in a context marked by a fierce attack from the Executive against the State and its workers, the refusal to call for salary negotiations, layoffs, the closure and merger of organizations and a strong adjustment.

“We need to pressure to start a process of income recovery in the public sector. Until now, the cuts in salaries are so large that on average they barely cover half the cost of the entire family basket. The percentage of employees who decide to leave the State is growing. We are losing highly qualified personnel,” said Aguiar, who also considered it essential to organize a strike that has a national scope.

“We reject any possibility that attempts to offset the fiscal cost of favors to the countryside and the richest with a new adjustment. The Government is planning the closure and merger of organizations and if that happens it will have a highly negative social impact,” added the Secretary General.

During the last few days, ATE members participated in demonstrations in support of retirees, human rights organizations, teachers and other sectors, in some of which they suffered repression from the police forces. They also rejected the conversion of the Banco de la Nación and the Yacimientos Carboníferos Río Turbio company into corporations, considering that this is the previous step to privatize both entities.
