Angola is still arresting officials involved in robbery

Luanda, Feb 25 (Prensa Latina) Angola's Criminal Investigation Service (CIS) reported the arrest of another employee of the General Tax Administration (GTA) linked to the theft of seven billion kwanzas (more than 7.6 million dollars).

According to a press release from the CIS, the accused was arrested on Sunday at the ‘4 de Fevereiro’ international airport, where he arrived from Dubai, the United Arab Emirates.

The GTA employee, who worked as a fiscal auditing technician of the Second Cargo Inspectorate, was on the run in Lisbon and embarked for Dubai on February 19, being Luanda his final destination on the present date.

For the time being, he has been charged with obstruction of justice and criminal association, based on strong evidence of his involvement in the fraudulent scheme of compensation payments, in relation to the refund of Value Added Tax (VAT), the statement added.

The CIS said that investigations are being carried out to clarify the fraudulent scheme behind this case, as a result of which at least eight other people have already been arrested.

The previous arrest, early in February, was also of an GTA official who worked as a technical supervisor of the cargo terminal of the ‘4 de Fevereiro’ airport, who has been charged with illegitimate access to the Information System, criminal association and embezzlement, among others.

The CIS has notified the arrests of a businessman and consultant of the Chinese company Huashi Group (H&S); and the VAT director; the administrator for the VAT Directorate, Strategic Planning and Information Technology; the director of Registration and Collection; and the head of the VAT reimbursement Department of the GTA, as well as a civil servant and a database technician, who illegitimately used system access privileges to appropriate VAT refunds, and the illegal reduction of fines to taxpayers notified by the GTA.
