The head of government demanded the application of deterrent measures against that neighboring country to put an end to the deaths that have occurred in the east of the DRC, for which the rebels of the March 23 Movement (M23) and the Rwandan Armed Forces are responsible, she said.
“In the face of the massacres and summary executions that Rwanda continues to carry out on our soil, we call for deterrent sanctions to restore order and security, and thus protect millions of Congolese living in Goma, Bukavu and other parts of the country under occupation,” said Suminwa.
She said that her country is ready to support independent investigations to document the violations of human rights and international humanitarian law that have occurred in the east of the country, and called for greater support in the face of the alarming situation, marked by thousands of wounded and displaced.
“We call on the international community to strengthen its humanitarian support, to provide resources to adequately care for the thousands of wounded and displaced,” said the DRC Prime Minister.
Suminwa also called for respect for sovereignty and said that history will judge mercilessly if nothing is done to end the conflicts in the DRC and elsewhere in the world. “We can change the course of history and we have a moral duty to do so for future generations,” she added.
The Human Rights Council will continue its work for three days, with the situation in the DRC as one of the main topics on the agenda.
