Consulted by Prensa Latina on the subject, the until recently president of the Peruvian Academy of Language, explained the context of his response.
“In history there are three times: the long time, the medium time and the current time. The long time lasts centuries and the current time a few years,” he said.
Martos explained that the long time cannot be modified overnight by a presidential decree, in reference to the order of the North American ruler Donald Trump to eliminate the Spanish-language website of the White House.
“The one who loses is his administration, which misses the opportunity to communicate with millions of citizens who speak Spanish,” added the man who is considered the greatest contemporary poet of Peru.
“The United States is the country where the number of Spanish speakers is growing the most,” which contributes decisively to making our language one of the first, or the first to expand in the world,” he added.
The poet warned that “one person cannot change that, no matter how important they may be.” ef/jcm/mrs
