On the 91st anniversary of Sandino’s assassination, the Cuban legislative body joined the Nicaraguan people and Government to honor the hero, who is considered a symbol of the struggle for sovereignty and friendship with the people.
“Sandino, like José Martí, hero of Cuba’s independence, represents the tireless struggle against the oppressor and the defense of the principles of self-determination and freedom,” the parliamentary group highlighted in a statement on Friday.
The Cuban legislators stressed that both heroes, from their trenches of combat and thought, left a legacy that transcends borders and times, while uniting peoples in the same spirit of resistance and hope.
They pointed out that Sandino fought for Nicaragua and Latin America, which made him “a beacon of hope and unity for the peoples who fight against imperialism and oppression.”
The parliamentary group reaffirmed the ties of brotherhood and solidarity between Cuba and Nicaragua, based on the principles of justice, equality and mutual respect.
It also reiterated its commitment to Latin American and Caribbean integration, as well as to building a more just world.
