Moscow worries about possible military deployment in Ukraine

Moscow, Feb 20 (Prensa Latina) The possible dispatch of a military contingent of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) to Ukraine raises concerns for Russian authorities, said today the Kremlin spokesman, Dmitri Peskov.

“We are closely following all these reports, all the official, sometimes contradictory, statements of the Europeans on the issue, and we are concerned, because it is about an eventual dispatch of military contingents of NATO countries to Ukraine,” the spokesman said.

Peskov thus commented on the intention of the British Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, to present to the US President, Donald Trump, a plan to deploy a military contingent in Ukraine.

He also recalled the statements of Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov that ‘the deployment of military contingents of NATO member countries on the territory of Ukraine cannot be acceptable’ to Russia.

The Bloomberg agency, citing Western officials, reported that the UK and France are seeking to obtain U.S. air support for forces they would like to deploy in Ukraine in the event of a peace agreement.

According to the media outlet, the plan could call for the deployment of up to 30,000 troops in major Ukrainian cities, ports and critical infrastructure.

The British Prime Minister will try to get Trump’s backing during his visit to Washington next week.

Russia has been carrying out a special military operation in Ukraine since February 24, 2022, whose objectives, according to President Vladimir Putin, are to protect the population from ‘genocide by the Kiev government’.

It also aims to tackle the national security risks posed by NATO’s eastward advance. Moscow has repeatedly warned that NATO is ‘playing with fire’ by supplying arms to Ukraine, and that foreign convoys with weapons would be ‘legitimate targets’ for its army as soon as they cross the border.
