President Díaz-Canel visits production bases in Cuban province

Cienfuegos, Cuba, Feb 19 (Prensa Latina) President Miguel Díaz-Canel on Wednesday visited production bases to exchange viewpoints and met with local residents of this south-central province, which is home to one of Cuba's main power generation plants, the Presidency informed.

The head of State arrived in the morning in Cienfuegos municipality, which has a population of more than 158,000 and holds the city of Cienfuegos and the bay of the same name.

In this important industrial, tourist and agricultural region, Díaz-Canel met with a representation of the more than 14,500 residents of the Historic Center People’s Council, headed by its president, María Regla Eguizabal.

The people’s power leader, described by the source as “a passionate woman with more than 20 years of community work,” explained to the president the transformations in the neighborhood.

She noted that along with the recovery of the housing stock and the conversion of old landfills into organoponic gardens, the People’s Council deals with teenage pregnancy, seeks alternatives for young people disconnected from work and combats the scourge of drugs.

Díaz-Canel also visited the Artists’ Workshop on Lamar Street, an old port warehouse, where a modern cultural center stands today, with exhibition halls for the artistic avant-garde of the territory. Various community projects are based there.

He also visited the Mártires de Barbados Agricultural Production Cooperative, which grows beans, root vegetables, fruit trees and vegetables on 144 hectares of irrigated land.

According to the Cuban Presidency, this is an entity that was a reference in food production for the municipality of Cienfuegos, but underwent a significant deterioration in its productive indicators and today they are struggling to recover them.

Díaz-Canel called to work to overcome the losses and report good results that can contribute to increasing the supply to the population, the publication noted.

Earlier, the president, who is also the first secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party (CC-PCC), visited the Carlos Manuel Céspedes Thermoelectric Power Plant, one of the main generating blocks in the country, which is working intensively to rehabilitate two of its units.

Accompanying the president were the member of the Political Bureau and secretary of organization of the CC-PCC, Roberto Morales, and local authorities.
