According to Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun, the idea is to connect the port city of Hai Phong, in northern Vietnam, with Lao Cai, a town bordering China’s Yunnan province.
Based on Vietnamese authorities, this railway aims to strengthen bilateral ties and facilitating trade between the two countries.
Guo noted that since last year, the two nations have held multiple exchanges of views on the railway interconnection.
Both sides agreed to advance feasibility studies for the standard gauge line linking Lao Cai, Hanoi and Hai Phong.
The rail link between Hekou in China and Lao Cai in Vietnam is also being pushed forward, the spokesman added.
The two states recently celebrated the Seventy Fifth anniversary of diplomatic relations.
Chinese President Xi Jinping stressed that China and Vietnam are neighboring socialist nations, united by deep friendship and a strategic community destiny.
This was the first foreign country To Lam visited last year after his appointment as general secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam.
