The policemen expressed their discontent due to the working conditions, considering them unacceptable.
They also demanded payment of their salary arrears, as well as access to basic resources such as electricity, drinking water and meals adapted to their needs.
The competent authorities did not react officially to this movement the day before, but the protest highlights the persistent structural dysfunctions within the security institutions Haiti.
Last December, the Haitian National Police Union (SPNH-17) insisted on its demand for a salary increase, taking into account the dangers they face in the fight against gangs.
The SPNH-17 demands from the higher command and the government a stable salary in accordance with the high cost of living, which not only affects the civilian population, but also the uniformed officers who fight against crime.
Previously, the union demanded the payment of salary arrears, the provision of an accelerated bank loan procedure, the regular financing of their debit cards, the negotiation of effective health insurance coverage and an equitable distribution of privileges.
Law enforcement officers wanted salaries to be granted to the spouses of policemen killed in the line of duty until they remarry, according to a survey conducted by the National Network for the Defense of Human Rights and broadcast by local radio.
