Heavy rain affects services and housing in Angola’s capital city

Luanda, Feb 18 (Prensa Latina) Floods and power outages are affecting the Angolan capital today after heavy rain and strong winds caused by a storm that hit during the early hours of the morning.

The Provincial Command of the Civil Protection and Fire Service of Luanda informed the local press that the evaluation of the damages continues and so far there are no records of human losses.

The spokesman of the National Electric Energy Distribution Company (ENDE), Lauro Fortunato, said that some areas suffered power cuts, a measure adopted due to failures in the medium voltage network and at the request of some inhabitants to avoid electric shocks and possible risks.

Fortunato told Radio Nacional de Angola that ENDE is working in the neighborhoods affected by the lack of service to restore normality in the next few hours.

Several schools in different localities suspended teaching due to the damage caused and the persistence of bad weather in the morning.

Among the most affected municipalities is Hoji-Ya-Henda, where the governor of Luanda, Luís Nunes, went early in the morning to assess the state of the infrastructure after the storm.

According to Jornal de Angola, Nunes carefully observed the state of the streets and properties of the inhabitants, as well as listened to the concerns of the local community.
