Bolsonaro calls for protests against Lula in Brazil

Brasilia, Feb 17 (Prensa Latina) Former President Jair Bolsonaro, accused today of being a coup plotter, recorded and published a video calling on Brazilians to protest against President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, scheduled by the opposition for March 16.

In the video, the far-right politician confirms his presence at the demonstration in the city of Rio de Janeiro.

“I, Silas Malafaia (a neo-Pentecostal Protestant pastor) and other leaders will be in Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro. Our agenda, freedom of expression, security, a course of life and Lula 2026 Out and Amnesty Now,” declared Bolsonaro.

The demonstrations are all critical of Lula, however, there are divergences in the guidelines.

While Bolsonaro is calling for “Lula out” for the 2026 elections, other right-wing politicians are demanding the impeachment of the founder of the Workers’ Party, as in the case of the event on Avenida Paulista in Sao Paulo, which has federal deputy Carla Zambelli among its promoters.

In addition to Rio and Sao Paulo, the opposition is organizing mobilizations against Lula and in favor of amnesty for those convicted of the coup acts of January 8, 2023 in all other Brazilian capitals.

For these anti-democratic episodes, the Supreme Court has convicted 374 people. Also the attorney general, Paulo Gonet, is about to finalize, for the coup plot, a complaint against Bolsonaro.

The indictment must be filed before the beginning of Carnival 2025 (February 28) and must point to the fact that the former military man led a criminal organization to carry out a coup d’état.

According to the Federal Police, the far-right politician was charged in three different cases, with sentences that together could reach 28 years in prison in the event of a maximum sentence.

The crimes attributed to the former president would be: integrating, promoting or financing a criminal organization (punishment of three to eight years in prison).

Trying to abolish the Democratic Rule of Law through violence or serious threat (punishment of four to eight years).

Trying to depose, through violence or serious threat, a legitimately constituted government (punishment of four to 12 years).

If the Attorney General’s Office asks for the minimum punishments, Bolsonaro could be sentenced to 11 years in prison.

But journalist Mônica Bergamo, from Folha de Sao Paulo, states in an article that allies of the former Army captain believe that Gonet will ask for more severe sanctions, taking into account that others involved in the coup events received up to 17 years in prison.

Another 39 people, including generals, former ministers, businessmen and politicians close to the former president, were also charged with the alleged plot in 2022.
