Officials said an unprecedented crowded situation developed around 10 p.m. local time at the New Delhi railway station near platforms 13 and 14.
Some of the passengers on the platforms fainted due to the sudden rush, sparking rumors of a stampede-like situation, and panic ensued, officials said.
Railroad Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw ordered a high-level investigation into the incident.
The railroads announced that chief commercial director Narsingh Deo and chief safety commissioner Pankaj Gangwar will be part of the inquiry committee.
The Delhi police have also started investigations into the unfortunate incident.
In addition to the deceased, dozens of people were injured, according to local media.
