In declarations to the France Inter channel, the Foreign Minister specified that President Emmanuel Macron will welcome representatives of “the main European countries”, without mentioning them or going into details of the content of what he described as “a working meeting”.
The day before, the Polish Chancellery referred to the meeting, which is expected to be attended by, among others, the German Chancellor, Olaf Scholz, and the British Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, and the Polish Prime Minister, Donald Tusk.
The urgency of the meeting is clear: in the European Union (EU), of which the United Kingdom is no longer a member, there is concern about the change of position of the United States in the war in Ukraine with the arrival in the White House of Donald Trump, who seems willing to negotiate with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, the end of the conflict, without giving a voice to the Europeans in the process. Since Trump’s triumph became a reality, several EU leaders, including Macron, have called for strengthening the 27-nation bloc, particularly on issues of defense and economic independence.
It is not known whether or not the Ukrainian president, Volodymir Zelensky, will have a place at tomorrow’s meeting in Paris, where the issue of the war will undoubtedly take center stage.
Aware of the change in Washington, which used to send money and weapons to Kiev, Zelensky has started to ask for EU support to be taken into account in the eventual negotiations.
