Kim Jong Il was born on February 16, 1942, a date that the DPRK consecrated as the Day of the Light Star in recognition of his contributions to independence and national sovereignty.
In addition to being general secretary of the Workers’ Party of Korea, he was chairman of the National Defense Commission and Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces.
Havana and Pyongyang established diplomatic relations on August 29, 1960, by decision of their historic leaders, Fidel Castro and Kim Il Sung.
Since then, Cuba and the DPRK maintain close reciprocal cooperation and coincide on international issues, including Pyongyang’s condemnation to the blockade that the United States has exercised for more than 60 years against Cuba.
