Brazil shaken by drop of Lula’s popularity

Brasilia, Feb 15 (Prensa Latina) The drop in Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva's popularity, registering the lowest level of his three terms as president at 24 percent, shook Brazil in the week ending today.

A survey published this Friday by the Datafolha institute revealed that this figure evaluated Lula’s government as good or very good, with a margin of error of two points.

Disapproval rose from 34 to 41 percent.

The percentage of respondents who rated the Executive as fair ranged from 29 to 32 percent.

For the sample, Datafolha interviewed 2,077 Brazilians in 113 cities between February 10 and 11.

In his three mandates in power, the lowest proportion of approval that the founder of the Workers’ Party (PT) had was in 2005, in the midst of the revelations of the so-called Mensalão.

Popularized by the then federal deputy Roberto Jefferson, in an interview that gave national resonance to the scandal, such neologism is a variant of the word monthly payment, used to refer to an allowance paid to parliamentarians to vote in favor of projects of interest to the Executive Branch.

At that time, the PT administration reached 28 percent assent.

Started in 2023, in the current mandate the previous negative mark was 35 percent, in December 2024, also registered in surveys of March and August of the same year.

Lula hinted on Friday the possibility of seeking reelection in the 2026 elections, although he considered that it is too soon to think about elections.

Whether I will be a candidate or not depends on the debate of many political parties, of the Brazilian society’, said the ruler during an interview granted this Friday to Radio Clube of the northern state of Para.
