Vietnam moves resolutely towards malaria eradication

Hanoi, Feb 14 (Prensa Latina) Vietnam today moves resolutely towards the eradication of malaria, a disease that remains a major challenge for public health and which it plans to eliminate completely by 2030.

According to statistics from the health ministry, between 2014 and 2024, the Indochinese nation recorded a significant decrease in the number of reported cases, which fell from 15,752 to 353 patients annually, as well as in mortality caused by the disease.

At present, 48 Vietnamese provinces and cities have already eliminated the sickness, while in those that still report cases, the country’s Institute of Malaria, Parasitology and Entomology is working with local authorities to adopt measures for early detection and treatment of the malady.

Hoang Dinh Canh, director of the Institute of Malaria, Parasitology and Entomology, explained that to reach the target, Vietnam must exterminate the malaria parasite nationwide by 2027, screen high-risk groups and control malaria outbreaks.

He added that strict mosquito control and mosquito bite prevention must be maintained in those provinces where the disease has been eliminated.

Malaria is an infectious disease caused by the Plasmodium parasite, transmitted by the Anopheles mosquito, for which there is still no preventive vaccine.

Consequently, the main strategy to prevent its spread is vector control.
