Italy reports 1,400 children diagnosed with cancer every year

Rome, Feb 14 (Prensa Latina) Some 1,400 children between the ages of zero and 14 are diagnosed with cancer in Italy every year, according to a report issued today by the Association of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology of this country (Aieop).

The report, released on the occasion of the celebration of World Childhood Cancer Day on February 15, also reveals that between the ages of 15 and 19, about 800 teenagers contract the disease every year.

According to this research published by the Aieop, more than 80 percent of the young patients who receive this diagnosis manage to overcome this serious disease, thanks to advances in research and effective treatments.

The document highlights that the overall survival of pediatric patients increased from 69.5 percent in the period 1989 to 1998, to 76.8 percent in the following decade, while between 2009 and 2017 it reached 81.1 percent, an upward trend that continues today.

That positive percentage is the result of constantly evolving scientific and clinical work, which enabled a significant improvement in survival in recent years, this analysis emphasizes.

In order to evaluate the programs aimed at tackling this illness, the conference ‘Pediatric Oncology in Italy: what’s new?’ will be held at 10:00 local time on Tuesday, February 18, at the Sala dei Gruppi Parlamentari of the Chamber of Deputies, the Aeiop announced in its press release.

The meeting is organized by the association, together with the Italian Federation of Associations of Parents and Patients of Pediatric Oncohematology (Fiagop), and is part of the activities for the world day against this disease, established on February 15, 2002 by the World Health Organization (WHO).

The source added that the event will have an important scientific and social value, with the presence of the most illustrious Italian pediatric oncologists, who will present the results of the most updated studies and research in the field of therapeutic innovations, adds the source.
