The enquiry identified an individual who posted on social media threats of an attack against da Silva during his visit to the city of Belém, capital of the state of Pará, during which the president would review the organization of the United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP30), scheduled to take place between November 10th and 20th.
Given the seriousness of the events, the PF filed judicial measures with the Federal Court of Pará against the suspect of threatening the progressive leader.
A search and seizure order was carried out, in addition to the imposition of measures, including the use of an electronic ankle bracelet and the prohibition of the suspect from approaching places where the authority is present. “Investigations are still ongoing to clarify all the details of the case,” the PF said in a statement.
In December 2023, Lula da Silva condemned cyberattacks on social networks and advocated for regulations on these platforms following attacks suffered by his wife.
The president stressed that Brazil has to carefully examine the forms of regulation adopted by the European Union, the United States and even China to define its way of controlling hate messages and coercion circulating on the Internet, and clarified that such a measure has to be very well discussed so that it does not become a form of censorship.
