Workers discuss proposal to close Yazaki firm in Uruguay

Montevideo, Feb 12 (Prensa Latina) Metalworkers (Untmra) are discussing today a pre-agreement with the Japanese company Yazaki, on the conditions for the closure of the plants of that firm in Uruguay. Assemblies are taking place in the two plants that the auto parts producer decided to close in the departments of Colonia and Canelones.

The pre-agreement is the result of negotiations between the company, the metallurgical union and the Ministry of Labor and Social Security (MTSS) and must be ratified by the workers’ assembly. According to the publication Caras y Caretas, the proposal includes a labor orientation stage for the employees, a profile study of the employees and labor reconversion programs. In addition, the company offered to pay a bonus in addition to the final severance payments, conditions accepted by Untmra which must be ratified by the assemblies.

Yazaki, with 20 years of operations here, decided to transfer its production to Paraguay under the argument of “competitiveness” problems.

Its departure is in addition to the closure and restructuring of other companies, and warnings from the Chamber of Industries of Uruguay.

The designated Minister of Labor and Social Security (MTSS), Juan Castillo, said that the Frente Amplio government will inherit labor and union conflicts that the outgoing administration did not resolve.

“From the labor point of view we are not in the best conditions,” he said at a press conference.
