Georgetown, Feb 10 (Prensa Latina) The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) emphasized on Monday that it plays an important role in supporting Haiti, including promoting higher funding for security and humanitarian aid before the international community.

The undersecretary general of Foreign and Community Relations within the CARICOM Secretariat, Elizabeth Solomon, said that the 48th Ordinary Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government of the organization, to be held from March 19 to 21 in Barbados, would be very important to discuss, among other important issues, CARICOM’s ongling support for Haiti.

In an interview, she explained that while the situation in the French-speaking member State remains difficult, there has been progress since the establishment of the Transitional Government.

“Positive things have happened since the Transitional Government was put in place. Yes, there are many challenges, you can’t deny that… but there is progress, and CARICOM is going to discuss how best to continue to support,” she added.

Solomon noted that despite the current challenges, preparations for the elections have begun.

“CARICOM continues to support the people of Haiti, in particular through the Eminent Persons Group (EPG) and whatever the good offices of the Secretariat can offer. The EPG continues to meet and speak with all stakeholders, who continue to call for the EPG’s ongoing involvement,” she stressed.
