Sheinbaum to the US on cartels: Start with your country

Mexico City, Feb 7 (Prensa Latina) Mexican president, Claudia Sheinbaum, reaffirmed the collaboration without subordination with the United States and told authorities of that nation to begin acting in their own country to combat fentanyl.

“Start with your country. Of course we are going to coordinate, to collaborate, but as I said on February 5, never subordination or interference,” said the dignitary in response to a question about the US memorandum that orders the total elimination of the cartels.

“How does fentanyl or any other drug arrive –it is not right to pass illegally and we do our work in our country– but how does it arrive? What happens after the border? Who operates the distribution?” she asked.

“Who sells the drugs in cities of the United States -she continued- that have caused so much tragedy? Where does the money from the sale of these drugs in the United States go? How is it that there are weapons in Mexico for the exclusive use of the army” of that country?

She considered that the authorities of the neighboring nation have a lot to do in their own territory and reiterated the willingness of her administration to collaborate, coordinate, meet and work with Washington, but always defending sovereignty.

“Then this decree of the (US) Attorney General’s Office is not very well understood (…), we have to wait to see what they propose,” said the dignitary.

On the other hand, she recalled that all agents of any US agency require a permit from Mexico to be in the country, which “is worked on with the security cabinet and there has to be coordination, collaboration and joint information.”

In its fight against organized crime, Mexico has arrested more than 10,000 people in the last four months for high impact crimes, while seizing more than 40 tons of drugs, including 20 million doses of fentanyl, and 4,981 firearms.
