During a meeting with U.S. Deputy Special Envoy for the Middle East Morgan Ortagus, the head of state emphasized that lasting stability in the south of the country is linked to Israeli withdrawal.
At the Baabda Presidential Palace, the Lebanese leader underlined the importance of the full implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701.
Aoun assured that the Lebanese army is ready to deploy in the villages from which the Israeli forces withdraw.
In his remarks, he indicated that the Israeli withdrawal from southern Lebanon must be completed within the deadline set for February 18, following an expansion of the 60-day cease-fire.
According to the President, cooperation with UN peacekeepers is being maintained in a constructive manner to implement Resolution 1701 and consolidate stability in the nation.
He added that the release of Lebanese prisoners is an integral part of the cessation of hostilities agreement that came into force on November 27.
In light of Ortagus’ comments against the non-participation of the Lebanese Resistance (Hizbulah) in the new government, the presidency of the Republic indicated that it is not involved in such statements which reflect the personal opinion of the U.S. official.
