Haiti updates environmental care program

Port-au-Prince, Feb 6 (Prensa Latina) The Haitian Ministry of Environment is today advancing several plans aimed at updating the so-called National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan.

This document is aligned with the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, and is a necessity for Haiti, as well as for other countries committed to the preservation of ecosystems.

According to the digital newspaper Haiti Libre, the nation is suffering an alarming loss of its biodiversity, a fact that represents a major threat to ecosystems and the well-being of the population.

The government -in the newspaper’s opinion- must involve public sector actors, the private sector, academia and environmental organizations of civil society in a consensual approach to biodiversity degradation.

The source argued that biodiversity in Haiti is divided into four essential dimensions: biological, health and population, socio-cultural and socio-economic.

Referring to the biological dimension, it pointed out that Haiti is a key biodiversity hotspot, as it has a rich and diverse ecosystem that is of utmost importance in the Caribbean region.

In terms of health and population, it explains that the population depends on many species of plants and animals to meet their primary health and livelihood needs.
