“I have always said that I am open to any elections. But there cannot be elections during the armed conflict,” he said.
“The Constitution would have to be changed. The hot phase will end, martial law will end and then, elections will be held,” the president added in an interview with British journalist Piers Morgan.
Questioned about statements of presidential illegitimacy coming from Moscow and Washington, the head of State admitted that “if martial law were lifted now, most of the Army would return home to their families. It would be unwise to hold elections immediately.”
Earlier, White House special envoy to Ukraine Keith Kellogg stated that the United States hoped Ukraine could hold its presidential elections before this year ends, especially if a truce with Russia was achieved.
Presidential elections in Ukraine were originally scheduled for March 2024.
