Parliament approves Honduras’ Budget 2025

Tegucigalpa, Feb 5 (Prensa Latina) The National Congress (CN) of Honduras today approved the General Budget 2025, which will allow the government of President Xiomara Castro to push ahead social projects in the last year of her term in office.

Submitted to the unicameral parliament in September last year, the income and expenditure budget for this fiscal year amounts to 430,907 billion lempiras -nearly 17 billion dollars-, an increase of 5.8 percent over that of 2024.

According to the central administration, the priority of the budget is public and social investment, with almost 98 billion lempiras (about four billion dollars), allocated to key sectors such as education, health and food security.

The public accounts were approved by the majority of the deputies present in a session which began on Tuesday and lasted until the early hours of Wednesday, with a notable absence of deputies from the National and Liberal parties, the main opposition parties.

The NC president, the ruling party’s Luis Redondo, emphasized that the approval of the General Budget allows speeding up health projects, with the construction of new hospitals, and guarantees the increase promised to the teachers.

There was no fraudulent pact, “there is no confidential item,” but an agreement with all the sectors in the Congress, Redondo asserted.

“We achieved it (the approval of the budget) in a democratic and transparent way, respecting the Organic Law of the Congress and the Constitution of the Republic,” said Rafael Sarmiento, head of the ruling party Libertad y Refundación.

In turn, the vice president of the NC, Hugo Noe Pino, said he felt very proud of having led the process of socialization and broad discussion of the General Budget of the Republic 2025.

He detailed that the final opinion of the approved Budget incorporated around 35 changes as suggestions and proposals from different public institutions, civil society and political parties.

“Honduras dawns with its public budget 2025 approved, congratulations,” Pino stressed.
