Iran defends OPEC for global energy stability

Tehran, June 5 (Prensa Latina) Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian today praised OPEC's role in the stability of the global energy market and called for unity in the face of threats of sanctions from the United States.

Keeping the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) away from politics is an important principle, the president said in a meeting with the group’s secretary general, Haitham al-Ghais.

If the members of the productive alliance “act together and in cohesion, the United States will not be able to sanction one of the members or exert pressure,” the Persian dignitary stressed, in light of the claims announced by the American president, Donald Trump.

The Executive’s website published a summary of the meeting between Pezeshkian and Al-Ghais, which also served to congratulate the oil expert on his re-election as head of OPEC.

According to the host statesman, the Iranian authorities seek to consolidate brotherhood between neighbors and Islamic countries, and “we consider it very important to achieve a common language, vision and policy among OPEC members.”

The transfer of experiences and achievements, as well as collective management of the market are serious areas of common interest, he exemplified.

The members of the group, he advised, “must act in such a way that their actions do not harm others; I believe that, if OPEC members act united and in cohesion, the United States will not be able to sanction one of the members or exert pressure,” he emphasized.

For his part, Al-Ghais thanked the Islamic Republic of Iran for its constructive role and highlighted the shared visions regarding the benefit of all members, “in an environment of sustainability and market stability.”

The spirit of cooperation is very important for the future; the improvement in relations between Iran and Saudi Arabia, he illustrated, has allowed OPEC to play a stronger role in the market.
