Foreign Minister denounces Rwanda’s role in war in DRC before EU

Kinshasa, Feb 5 (Prensa Latina) The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Thérèse Kayikwamba Wagner, today denounced before the European Union (EU) the role of Rwanda in the war in the east of the country and called for sanctions.

Speaking at the Africa-European Union Parliamentary Assembly in Brussels, the foreign minister said that, although the city of Goma, in the province of North Kivu, “remains under illegal occupation by Rwandan forces, Kigali has not yet been sanctioned by its most powerful allies, including the EU.”

Kayikwamba Wagner referred to the high number of deaths during the attack on that city, which rose to three thousand, while considering that the inhabitants of the city and the camps of displaced persons, around three million civilians, are hostages of the March 23 Movement (M23) and Rwanda, and used as human shields.

“Goma is a besieged city, isolated from the world by a methodical attack, intended to inflict maximum suffering,” she said, adding that this is happening without any measures being taken against the aggressors, which shows that the pain of the Congolese has not moved hearts or awakened consciences.

The minister stressed that the horror of what happened in Goma must break the silence of the watching world, and questioned the announcement of the M23, which yesterday began a humanitarian ceasefire.

“How can we talk about humanity with our hands still soaked in the blood of innocents? “How can we claim peace after having methodically sown terror?” said the chancellor, who considered the issue a cynical staging, intended to divert attention.

She insisted that the war of the M23, supported by Rwanda, is not only for territories, but is an economic war characterized by the plundering of the natural resources of the DRC.

“This offensive was not only aimed at taking control of the city, but also systematically destroying vital infrastructure and plunging the city into a total blackout,” she said.

In this regard, she recalled that during the siege, water and electricity supplies were deliberately attacked, main roads were cut and airspace was blocked.

“No humanitarian convoy, no medical evacuation, no emergency personnel can enter or leave except through Rwanda,” described Kayikwamba Wagner.

The head of DRC diplomacy questioned the coherence of European values in the face of the crisis in her country and reaffirmed Kinshasa’s firm commitment to the diplomatic processes in Luanda and Nairobi, despite Rwanda’s bad faith.
