In addition to voting for the president and vice president, Ecuadorians will elect five Andean legislators and 151 national assembly members.
The Ecuadorian Assembly currently has 137 seats but the legislature that will start in May will have 14 more seats to be in line with the 2022 Population and Housing Census results.
According to the data of this demographic study, the current population of Ecuador is 17.7 million inhabitants, 3.3 million more than in 2010. Due to this, the number of legislators will increase.
Article 118 of the Ecuadorian Constitution states that the Assembly will elect two legislators in each province and one more for every 200,000 Ecuadorians or a fraction over 150,000 persons, according to the latest national census.
The provinces of Azuay, Esmeraldas, Guayas, Manabi, Morona Santiago, Orellana, Pichincha, Santa Elena, Tungurahua, and the Metropolitan District of Quito will increase their members in the legislative body.
More than 2,000 candidates are vying for one of the 151 seats.
On February 9, more than 13.7 million Ecuadorians will vote in a context marked by power struggles and a polarized scenario.
