President of the Banco de Previsión Social (BPS), Alfredo Cabrera, said the report “puts relevant and quality information on the aging phenomenon on the table. Uruguay is an aging country, where more than 15% of its inhabitants are over 65 years of old”.
He added that it is estimated that by 2100, 30% of the population will be in this age group.
The report is included in the BPS portal which provides quantitative and qualitative information organized by thematic axes: demography of aging, the social and economic situation of the elderly, old age and social security, and social representations of old age.
He pointed out that the demographic reality conditions changes in social policies.
“The old model of economic benefits is changing to a new model of people with rights, who are the object of a more comprehensive policy and vision,” Cabrera said.
