Ecuadorian President’s party conducts smear campaign against rival

Quito, Jan 31 (Prensa Latina) The electoral campaign in Ecuador continues amidst accusations of actions by the ruling party to discredit the Citizen Revolution (RC) movement, whose candidate, Luisa González, is one of the favorites according to polls.

The mayor of Guayaquil, Aquiles Álvarez, published on X an image to prove that González’s team was not the one that placed a poster in the city with the colors of RC allegedly promoting the construction of a prison complex in the Yeyo Úraga baseball stadium.

President Daniel Noboa, who is seeking reelection, used the social network to affirm that, if González wins, the sports center of the coastal city would become a prison.

The founder and leader of RC, former president Rafael Correa, criticized this type of strategy by the right to hinder support for González. “Only a fool can believe that a prison will be built in the park we built during my government. It is another desperate lie by Noboa, who will destroy tourism in Santa Elena with the Anconcito prison,” he wrote.

Virgilio Hernández, candidate for the Andean Parliament and member of the RC, pointed out that there is still a high margin of indecision and, in his opinion, that keeps Noboa uneasy, so he did not rule out a lack of respect for the popular will. “There is a dangerous cocktail and anything can happen (…) There are elements that leave in doubt whether the popular will should be respected or not,” Hernández added in an interview with Radio Pichincha.

The politician urged citizens to defend democracy and watch the vote, because the country is faced with a leader with all the money in the world, who pays millions in advertising, makes abusive use of the State and the electoral authorities do not fulfill their role.

Political consultant and strategist, Daniel Ivoskus, said he had never seen before the magnitude of the dirty campaign and fake news that is going on these days in Ecuador, and he assured that 90 percent of what is circulating is false.
