The information appears in Diario El Salvador and reminds that in June 2024, the president announced a crusade against this crime nationwide, but it has not materialize until now.
In the initiative, the head of State reiterated the need to create the National Anti-Corruption Center and enabling citizens’ complaints, among other legal actions against public officials.
On his official X account, he explained that this step will seek to reinforce transparency and probity of public officials through clear and forceful measures, which will also hit the so-called ‘white collars’ and the alleged untouchables.
The bill also proposes the creation of a new category of crime punishable with imprisonment for the use of figureheads.
This law seeks to toughen the penalties for corruption among public officials.
The document would contemplate the creation of the National Anti-corruption Center that will be in charge of carrying out tasks related to intelligence with advanced technology under the responsibility of the Attorney General’s Office.
In this way, there would be real time access to databases and public records of properties and vehicles, among others, to detect suspicious activities immediately.
In his message, Bukele stressed that the law is “just the beginning of a firm effort to eradicate corruption in El Salvador, just as we did with gangs, homicides, rapes, kidnappings, extortion and crime, which have become a thing of the past in our country.”
Currently the Attorney General’s Office is advancing several cases of corruption in previous governments and barely acted against others that allegedly involve officials of the current executive and that, according to Bukele, no one can act outside the law, so those guilty will have to respond to justice.
