During an interview with the US agency Bloomberg News, the former president said he can count on the international mobilization of right-wing forces to change the decisions of justice in Brazil.
Bolsonaro, who is nicknamed “Trump of the tropics” by his followers, sees recognition wherever he looks, and appreciates the current US president as his potential path to political redemption.
The former president also considered that Trump has a clear and realistic line of action similar to that of Brazil under his presidency (2019-2022), including the drilling of oil wells in indigenous reserves. This extends to the deportation of thousands of Brazilian undocumented migrants, including his supporters.
Bolsonaro’s considerations for this dilemma are typically blunt: “The law is yours,” he declared of the United States. “If you don’t want to be deported, go there legally,” he stressed.
Bolsonaro sees Trump as a means to help resolve his legal difficulties and breathe life back into his political ambitions.
According to Bloomberg News, Bolsonaro’s presidency left a legacy of growing political polarization and found expression in an attack by his supporters on the institutions of democracy in Brasilia on January 8th, 2023, days after Lula da Silva took over office.
