Cuban residents in Latin America and Caribbean support Cuba

Caracas, Jan 30 (Prensa Latina) The Network of Cuban Residents in Latin America and the Caribbean expressed their firm support for Cuba's declaration that rejects US Government's decision to use the Guantanamo Naval Base to imprison migrants.

In a statement circulating in Caracas on Thursday, the community in solidarity with their country of origin affirmed that the measure “not only represents an act of brutality, but also a flagrant violation of human rights and the dignity of people.”

We agree with the Cuban Foreign Ministry that many of the people affected by this policy are victims of the US Government’s own actions, including its exploitative economic policies, its government management and its hostile foreign policy towards their countries of origin, the document added.

The text pointed out that migrants, many of whom have historically contributed to the United States’ economy, “have played essential roles in sectors such as agriculture, construction, industry and services.”

It stressed that many established their lives in that country, forming families and building a future that is now threatened by “unjust and dehumanizing decisions.”

The Network reaffirmed and denounced, once again, that the territory where these migrants are intended to be imprisoned does not belong to the United States.

It ratified that the Guantanamo Naval Base “is a portion of the territory of our beloved island (in the east), which remains illegally occupied against the will of the people and the Government of Cuba.”

The Cuban residents in Latin America and the Caribbean pointed out that this facility, sadly known for housing a center of torture and indefinite detention, “is a symbol of systematic violations of human rights and international law.”

They said that using it to imprison migrants “would further aggravate this situation, generating a scenario of risk and insecurity that might have serious consequences for regional stability.”

The Network of Cuban Residents in Latin America and the Caribbean joins the call of the Cuban Foreign Ministry to denounce this inhumane measure and demand respect for the rights of migrants, as well as the return of the territory of Guantanamo to Cuba, the press release asserted.

In this regard, it reiterated its commitment to justice, peace and the defense of human rights, and its solidarity “with all the people affected by this unjust and repressive policy.”

“Guantanamo is and will always be Cuban!” reaffirmed the statement, signed by the Network and the Marti Association of Cuban Residents in Panama.
