Confiscation of organized crime assets increased in Brazil in 2024

Brasilia, Jan 30 (Prensa Latina) Brazil’s Federal Police (PF) increased by 70% the number of confiscations of goods and money from organized crime, according to data confirmed of the work carried out by that corporation in 2024.

Quoted by the Minister of Justice and Public Security, Ricardo Lewandowski, the balance reveals that the seizures resulted in a total value of 5,6 billion reais (955 million dollars), a number 70% higher than 2023 (3,3 billion reais or 563 million dollars).

According to Lewandowski, the rise in the seizure guarantee shows that the PF is decapitalizing organized crime in Brazil.

“These data not only demonstrate the success of the operations, but also the direct impact on reducing the ability of criminal factions to act in our country,” he said.

Also the Minister highlighted the main investigations carried out by the agents, such as the completion of the investigation that dealt with the murder of councilwoman Marielle Franco and the driver Anderson Gomes in 2018.

“The clarification of these crimes, which for years have permeated Brazilian society with a sense of impunity, was another victory for the diligent work of the Federal Police,” he said.

There was also an increase in the number of drug seizures.

Last year, the PF seized 74,5 tonnes of cocaine, up 2,8% on the 2023 figure. There was a 15% increase in marijuana seizures and 20,7% in ecstasy seizures.

Police figures also show an 11,6% drop in firearms registrations.
