Russia and Syria seek friendly bilateral cooperation

Moscow, Jan 29 (Prensa Latina) The Foreign Ministry confirmed that, at the closure of negotiations between the Russian and Syrian delegations in Damascus, the parties expressed their desire to develop bilateral cooperation on principles of friendship.

“During a frank discussion on the whole range of issues of Russian-Syrian relations at the current turning point, the parties stressed the desire to continue building multifaceted bilateral cooperation on the principles of traditional friendship and mutual respect between Russia and Syria,” the statement said.

The Russian Foreign Ministry stressed that the Russian delegation reaffirmed its unwavering support for the unity, territorial integrity, and sovereignty of Syria. Russia also expressed its readiness to provide the Syrian people with the necessary assistance to reconstruct the country.

The Foreign Ministry also said that in the exchange of views on the emerging situation in Syria and its surroundings, the Russian delegation stressed the importance of the Syrians solving internal problems by establishing a sustainable political process and an inclusive dialogue with the participation of the entire spectrum of political forces and ethnic-confessional groups.

“It was agreed to continue bilateral contacts to reach appropriate agreements in the context of readiness to strengthen multifaceted ties and mutual understanding between Moscow and Damascus, including foreign policy aspects,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said.

On January 28th, an official interdepartmental Russian delegation headed by the Special Representative of the President of Russia for the Middle East and Africa, Mikhail Bogdanov, visited Damascus for the first time since the change of power in the Syrian Arab Republic.

The mission was received by the head of the new Syrian administration, Ahmed al-Sharaa, with whom they held detailed talks. Members of the Syrian interim government, including Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shibani and Health Minister Maher al-Sharaa, were also present at the meeting.
