According to a joint statement issued by the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Defense, seven Carabinieri officers will join two Italians in late January, who are already present at the EUBAM-Rafah, to provide humanitarian assistance at that site, bordering Egypt, 30 kilometers south of Gaza.
The note indicated that deploying this mission represents a concrete step to support the recent ceasefire deal in the Strip. It aims to coordinate and facilitate the movement of up to 300 injured and sick Palestinians and assist vulnerable people in the context of a humanitarian emergency.
Italy’s Carabinieri officers have been selected within the Second Mobile Brigade to join the European Gendarmerie Force (EUROGENDFOR), with troops from Spain and France.
Upon announcing the Italian presence in this mission, aimed at providing the necessary protection to the EUBAM-Rafah, Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said in statements published on the Quotidiano Nazionale website that this was “an important European commitment that we have always asked for.”
