(PH) issued a statement on Tuesday supporting country fellows abroad and backing President Gustavo Petro in his demands to stop degrading treatment of migrants in the United States. The statement said that these people have an irregular situation in the United States, but they are not criminals and have rights enshrined in national and international treaties.
“Most of them are workers fleeing violence and structural exclusion, the product of 200 years of an economic system that has only benefited an oligarchic elite,” the statement said.
The political group also warned that mass deportations of migrants in undignified conditions, without adherence to due process and protocols that respect human rights, are measures that directly affect the income of millions of families and the economy of countries in the region.
The PH also denounced the arbitrariness of the US government, which, with economic and commercial sanctions, hides its real interest in prioritizing protectionist policies that will alter international trade.
“In addition, it seeks to subdue the transformative spirit of our government and our people, and incites an internal opposition that prioritizes business over the defense of its inhabitants and that seeks by all means to dislodge the Colombian government’s Historic Pact project,” it warned.
The left-wing coalition also called on social and grass roots movements in Latin America, the Caribbean and North America, as well at the world at large, to confront actions against States, governments and progressive social and political forces.
On the other hand, it predicted that the Extraordinary Meeting of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC), to be held on January 30 in Honduras, will devise actions allowing the region to uphold the rights of the migrant population and to accelerate an integrationist agenda.
The PH called for an international meeting in Colombia in April, and requested the attendance of parliamentarians, leaders of progressive, democratic and left-wing social and political organizations, for sovereignty, human rights, as well as for continental and world peace.
The coalition reiterated its support for President Petro.
