According to the G1 website, summoning a representative of another country to request information on a specific issue, in diplomacy, is a gesture that shows the Government’s concern on the matter.
Escobar took office on January 21.
He is heading the diplomatic mission, as President Donald Trump has not yet appointed the new U.S. ambassador to Brasilia.
The Foreign Ministry’s call surfaced after the migrants arrived in Brazil handcuffed on a charter flight.
Authorities called for a dignified and humane treatment of the returnees.
The use of handcuffs on deportation flights has always been a common practice in the northern country, according to the Federal Police (PF), but the routine is that they are removed before disembarking.
However, in the case of the plane that landed on Friday with 88 Brazilians in Manaus, capital of the northern state of Amazonas, the deportees remained handcuffed when stepping on national soil, a fact considered degrading and unacceptable by the Government.
In an official statement, the administration of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva classified the episode as a violation of the treaties signed between the two countries and protested against the indiscriminate use of handcuffs.
