Angola calls for end of hostilities in the DRC and return to dialogue

Luanda, Jan 28 (Prensa Latina) Angola on Tuesday called for an immediate end of hostilities in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and a return to the negotiating table within the framework of the Luanda Process.

During an emergency meeting of the Peace and Security Council of the African Union (AU), held virtually, the secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Esmeralda Mendonça, said that dialogue is the path recognized by the African Union and the international community for a peaceful and lasting solution.

Mendoça noted that her country, which holds the presidency of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR) and has the AU mandate to mediate in the crisis between the DRC and Rwanda, has led political and diplomatic initiatives to restore peace and security.

She pointed out that Angolan President João Lourenço has worked to achieve stability in the region, combat the presence of armed groups and build trust between Kinshasa and Kigali, but despite those efforts, hostilities continue and the ceasefire in force since August 4, 2024 has been violated.

“The Angolan Government strongly condemns the actions by the M23 and reaffirms its commitment to the defense of human rights, the protection of civilians and the preservation of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the DRC,” Mendonça stressed.

She added that Angola expects that a final peace agreement will be signed at a future Tripartite Summit between Angola, the DRC and Rwanda, which will represent a decisive step towards stabilization and strengthening regional cooperation.

The emergency meeting was called in light of the deteriorating security situation in eastern Congo, due to the advance of the M23 on Goma, the capital of North Kivu province.
