Tribute to José Martí in Uruguay on the eve of his 172nd birthday

Montevideo, Jan 26 (Prensa Latina) Cubans, Uruguayans and people from other nationalities paid tribute to Cuban National Hero José Martí on Friday, on the eve of his 172nd birthday.

The event took place at Plaza Cuba, in this capital, where a bust of the Cuban apostle served as a meeting point for those who acknowledge him as “an exceptional example as a creator and humanist,” as defined by Cuban Chargé d’Affaires Jorge Martí.

Present in the event were staff from the Cuban Embassy and members of the Cuban medical brigade that provides services at the “José Martí” Eye Hospital in Montevideo.

Cuban residents, Uruguayans in solidarity with Cuba, social and political activists and members of the diplomatic corps also attended the tribute.

On this occasion, the Cuban Embassy received a donation of artworks inspired by Martí from the hands of their creators, Enrique Fuentes and Román Torrén, Cuban residents here.

Martí lives in each one of us, in those who work and fight for a better world, said the Cuban ambassador, who recalled the everlasting link that the Cuban apostle forged with Uruguay, to which he served as consul.

The diplomat said that Martí’s ideology is in the struggles that his people face.

In particular to confront the “prolonged and criminal blockade, intensified in recent years with Cuba’s inclusion on a US spurious unilateral list of countries that allegedly sponsor terrorism.”

In this regard, he considered it a mockery that Donald Trump included Cuba again on such a list on the day of his inauguration, thus reversing a decision by his predecessor, Joe Biden.

US authorities know perfectly well that Cuba is not a sponsor of terrorism, and they do know how much the inclusion in this fraudulent designation affects its people, he stressed.
