The Japanese government voiced concern over the humanitarian situation in Gaza and hopes for an improvement soon thanks to the pact. It expects that such a mechanism promotes long-term recovery and ensures peace and stability in the region.
At a press briefing, Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi stressed that the deal defines the cessation of military activities, the release of hostages, and a rise in humanitarian aid activities, hence its importance.
Israel’s offensive in Gaza began in October 2012 and has so far killed more than 46,000 Palestinians, most of them women and children.
The ceasefire deal is expected to come into effect on January 19.
