Italian, Israeli FMs discussed an agreement on Gaza

Rome, Jan 15 (Prensa Latina) Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani and his Israeli counterpart, Gideon Sa'ar, met in this capital to address the need for a ceasefire in Gaza, a report indicated on Wednesday.

A statement published on the Italian Foreign Ministry’s official website stresses that, during the meeting held at the Villa Madama Palace in Rome on Tuesday, Tajani stressed his country’s support for a peace agreement that would end clashes in which, due to Israeli attacks, more than 46,500 Palestinians have already killed in the Gaza Strip.

The Italian foreign minister reaffirmed his Government’s position in favor of the proposal for the recognition of two States to solve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Shortly before meeting with Sa’ar on Tuesday, Tajani had a phone talk with Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammad Mustafa, to whom he voiced his support for establishing an independent State that unites the Gaza Strip and the West Bank.

However, at the press briefing following the exchange between the two foreign ministers, Sa’ar reiterated Israel’s opposition to creating a Palestinian State, although he acknowledged that a ceasefire may be signed in the coming days as a result of talks taking place in Doha, the capital of Qatar.
